Cycling 25miles - Mt Hood
Ok, now we are getting into some mileage. This is my favorite part of the season, this year we are taking on new rides, with a lot of fun. I'm excited to get to ride a portion of the Barlow Trail ride!! The Boy Scouts of America Cascade Pacific Council scheduled a 50mile ride on this trail from Oregon City up to Government Camp, we already had a backpacking trip scheduled for that weekend and are unable to join them, so we did a portion of it with our cycling group. This ride was brought to us with the help of Jeremy!
We started off our ride at the Brightwood store, where one of the boys (yes, my son) got a flat tire. Great news! Learning opportunity! I love these moments...so the boys got to learn that YES, flat tires do happen.
After our delay we were on the trail down E Barlow Trail Rd to Lolo Pass Rd. Take a Right on Lolo Pass Rd and follow down to Hwy 26.
Cross Hwy 26, and follow the Hwy for about a mile. Turn Right on Still Creek Rd. We took a slight detour to check out the bridge that can take you back to Hwy 26 across from the Mt Grocery store. There is currently an outdoor store up there that will be carrying cycling repair kits, if you should need one.
Keep on Still Creek Road up Mt Hood for some nice rolling hills (yes, one of them is pretty steep.) We hit gravel part way up and were unable to finish our miles up, as planned. I dont know how far the gravel lasted, but that is completely unavailable on my bike. So we turned around.
It was a quick trip back down hill, where the boys were having a blast.. We had to add some miles on at the end, so instead of turning off E Barlow Trail Road to the store, we kept going for about a mile an half. Those were some grueling hills for the end of our ride, but the boys completed in style. Very proud of them.
Only one incident with one of the boys where they struggled on this ride, because he was doing it for fun, and not for the merit badge, he quickly understood while its important to build on your rides, and not skip alot of rides. Since it was only his 3rd ride this season, and its almost over, he really struggled on completing it. Lesson learned.
